The Oikos University is a private Christian educational institution without government recognition, based in Oakland , California .

history

The university was founded in 2004 by Pastor Jongin Kim. Kim is currently the rector and runs the private educational institution along with board chairman Young-Kyo Choi. She is closely associated with Praise God Korean Church and Shepherd University of San Francisco .

subjects

Theology , music , nursing and Asian medicine are taught at the university, comparable to a private vocational school . She was admitted under license from the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education as of May 13, 2011 and is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technician. Since 2011 the facility has had a license to teach applied acupuncture .

The educational institution is not subject to any government oversight or government approval by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation .

Rampage

On April 2, 2012, there was a rampage on campus. Seven people were killed and three injured. It was the highest casualty rate since the 2007 Virginia Tech rampage, which killed 32 people. The 43-year-old perpetrator of Korean descent, a former student of the college, surrendered an hour later in a supermarket eight kilometers away in Alameda , to which he had fled in the car of one of his victims. The perpetrator One L. Goh does not have to answer in court. After pleading not guilty, he was acquitted by the responsible judge on January 8, 2013. Since he cannot be tried because of a mental disorder, Goh was instead placed in a psychiatric hospital.
