life and work

Oladélé Ajiboyé Bamgboyé was born in Nigeria in 1963. He studied chemical engineering in Glasgow from 1981 to 1985 and media arts at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1996 to 1998 .

“My work opposes any attempt to continue to systematically deny that there have ever been achievements in Africa, or that there are today, that are comparable to those of the West. In the field of art, the Western establishment often takes views that ultimately boil down to the assertion of the general intellectual superiority of Western contemporary art, and even well-intentioned efforts to achieve political and cultural correctness do nothing to change that ... If you look at any in the West Television broadcast about Africa, one is confronted with different degrees of voyeurism. We are only presented with tragic phenomena, we are only presented with disasters, natural and man-made, and armed conflicts. Africa continues to be naturalized, a poor relative of the developed world. What we need are positive and real images of Africa's materiality. That is exactly the materiality that has so often been plagiarized. Africa was gutted by others who sought to appropriate its resources, while the only ones who did not get any of the booty were the Africans themselves ...

My work aims to overthrow antiquated views of Africa by offering images that compete with and question the images seen in the mass media - a strategy that I believe is necessary to portray Africa normalize."

The works Well without End (1994) and Homeward Bound (1995–1997) address Bamgboyé's own view of Africa.
