Olaf Bandt (* 1959 in Dortmund ) is a German engineer and conservationist . Since November 2019 he has been chairman of the organization Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland , abbreviated BUND.

background

Olaf Bandt completed training as a car mechanic and technical officer assistant at Deutsche Shell Tanker GmbH. He then studied environmental and hygiene technology at the Giessen University of Applied Sciences and graduated as a Dipl.-Ing. (FH). He worked as a consultant and appraiser before joining BUND in 1992 as a campaigner for waste prevention. After various tasks at BUND, he became the organization’s federal manager in 2008. At the federal delegates' assembly in November 2019, Bandt was elected as the new chairman of the BUND with 89.9 percent of the votes. His predecessor Hubert Weiger , who had been in office since 2007, had not run again.

In an initial reaction to the election result, Bandt said: “The incumbent federal government is showing too little willingness to shape the future. We won't let her get away with that. The world is facing a paradigm shift. The climate and species crisis must mean that we live, produce and consume differently. In overcoming crises, it is essential to reconcile the social and ecological aspects of the transformation that lies ahead of us and to actively shape the upheaval. "

Bandt is married, has three daughters and lives in a cooperative housing project in Brandenburg.
