Olaf Barda

Olaf Barda (born Olaf Martinius Olsen , born August 17, 1909 in Kristiania , † May 2, 1971 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian chess player .

Barda won the Norwegian championship in 1930, 1947, 1948, 1952, 1953 and 1957 and was the first Norwegian to receive the title of International Master from FIDE in 1952 . He also represented Norway at the 1930 Chess Olympiad in Hamburg . His son Yngvar Barda (1935-1999) played for Norway at the 1956 Chess Olympiad in Moscow , but was only used as a substitute in 7 games.

Olaf Barda also made a name for himself as a correspondence chess player . He was Norwegian correspondence chess master in 1946 and 1949/1950 and was fourth at the 4th World Correspondence Chess Championship (1950-1953). In 1953 he was appointed correspondence chess grandmaster .

He wrote the book Sjakk! Historikk, teori, strategi (Oslo 1943, 2nd edition 1957).
