Olavi Honka

Olavi Uuno Viktor Honka (born Bremer ; born April 7, 1894 in Turku , † April 29, 1988 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish lawyer. He was a judge at the Supreme Administrative Court from 1937 to 1955 and then served as Chancellor of Justice for six years until his retirement . As a judicial officer with no previous political experience, he was elected in 1961 by a coalition of parties as a common candidate for the upcoming presidential election in 1962 . The parties of this so-called Honka League, to which parties as diverse as the Social Democratic Party of Finland and the right-wing conservative National Collection Party belonged, were primarily linked to dissatisfaction with incumbent Urho Kekkonen . The Finnish communists' propaganda branded Honka as a right-wing radical candidate who wanted to change the country's foreign policy line, which was geared towards friendship with the Soviet Union . The party alliance behind Honka broke up in November 1961 after it became clear in the course of the banknote crisis that Honka's candidacy was facing massive foreign policy difficulties. Honka renounced his candidacy on November 23. At the same time, his career ended in the public eye.
