action

The unemployed artist Shinichi Goto is kidnapped for no apparent reason. He is locked in a windowless cell for 10 years. His only contact with the outside world is a TV and a daily ration of Chinese dumplings. After he is suddenly released, he goes on a hunt for his tormentors. He meets the young waitress Eri and the two fall in love. After Goto "tasted" the restaurant where the dumplings were made, he discovered that a powerful, shady businessman named Doushima had kidnapped him. Doushima blames him for the "greatest disgrace in his life" and offers him a game: If Goto finds out this disgrace, Doushima will kill himself, otherwise he will have Eri murdered. For a long time Goto has no idea what he is talking about. Only under hypnosis does he find out that “Doschima” is a former schoolmate named Kakinuma, who was cut off from the whole class because of his seemingly inhuman cold feeling . Kakinuma's only human emotion was his singing, which was mocked by everyone - only Goto was touched and began to cry. Kakinuma took this pity as an incredible disgrace, and he vowed to hold Goto accountable. When Goto finds out, Kakinuma commits suicide.

Film adaptations

The manga was first filmed as Oldboy in 2003 by Korean director Park Chan-wook . Park moved the story location from Tokyo to Seoul , and the protagonist was given the Korean name Oh Dae-su. The plot has been streamlined, and while Shinichi Goto is a physically and mentally strong fighter, Oh Dae-su is mentally and physically a wreck. The film adds that Oh Dae-su is charged with the murder of his wife, which does not appear in the manga. The reason for the kidnapping was also changed: instead of the “banality” in the manga, it was the discovery of incest in the film . The famous squid scene is also a reinvention of Park Chan-wook.

In 2013 the American remake Oldboy appeared with Josh Brolin in the lead role.

In Japan, the series was published by Futabasha in the Manga Action magazine from 1996 to 1998 . The chapters were also published collectively in eight volumes. In the United States, Old Boy is distributed by Dark Horse Comics . In Germany, the work was published in full from 2006 to 2007 by Carlsen Verlag in a four-volume edition.
