The Old Bridge of Dee , the obsolete Granny Ford Bridge , is a road bridge in the Scottish village of Bridge of Dee in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The bridge was built between 1737 and 1740 as part of the trunk road between Portpatrick and Carlisle . In 1763 it became part of one of the British military roads. The Old Bridge of Dee did not meet the dimensions defined in an ordinance passed in 1797. For this reason, it was replaced in 1825 by the Threave Bridge , a few hundred meters upstream , over which the A75 now runs. In 1989 the Old Bridge of Dee was partially restored.

description

The 57 m long masonry viaduct is located on the southern edge of the Bridge of Dee. It leads a side street in four brick-lined segment arcs over the Dee . The masonry is made of quarry stone . The identically crafted arches have clear widths of 12.5 m. Pointed icebreakers emerge on both sides of the pillars . The border parapets close with granite natural stone caps. The carriageway is only 3.4 m wide and therefore does not correspond to the minimum of 4.9 m defined in 1797.
