Bridge of Dee , Gaelic : Drochaid Dhè , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway or in the traditional county of Kirkcudbrightshire . It is located about three kilometers southwest of Castle Douglas on the right bank of the Dee .
traffic
Presumably, during the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, a Roman road leading from Glenlochar via Gatehouse of Fleet to Loch Ryan passed the village. She crossed the Dee at a river island a few hundred meters downstream. A Scottish military road probably followed the same route centuries later.
On the southern edge of the village, the eponymous Old Bridge of Dee spans the Dee. It was built between 1737 and 1740 as part of the trunk road between Portpatrick and Carlisle and was an important crossing of the Dee. From 1763 one of the Scottish military roads was passed over it. In 1825 it was replaced by the Threave Bridge a few hundred meters upstream . Today the A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ), which connects Bridge of Dee to the trunk road network, runs over this.
In 1864 Bridge of Dee received its own station along the newly established Kirkcudbright Railway . After passenger traffic was stopped in September 1946, the route was finally closed in 1965.
