The club currently plays in the Arthurian League and won the league and Arthur Dunn Cup doubles in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

history

The club was founded in 1876 by former students from the Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. Since March 1853, reports of games taking place at the school had been in the press, and Charterhouse was one of the founding teams of the Football Association. It was one of several clubs that grew out of old public school boys in England in the 19th century. Other clubs formed under similar circumstances include the Old Etonians and the Old Westminsters . Other former members of the school had founded Stoke-on-Trent FC in 1867, later known as Stoke City . The Old Carthusians first competed in the FA Cup in 1879-80. At the time the Football League was founded in 1888, the Old Carthusians were the southernmost team interested in joining the northern dominated league, but they were never accepted into the league. The Old Carthusians were one of only four clubs to win the FA Cup in 1881 in the first eleven years that the FA Cup was awarded, defeating the aforementioned Old Etonians.

The Old Carthusians team from 1881, the year they won the FA Cup

In 1883 they reached the semi-finals again and lost to Blackburn Olympic in a game that marked the change in football in the late 19th century, away from the old boys' clubs that had been so successful in the first real decade of the game to the clubs of the working men. In comparison, the Carthusians were made up of educated men, but the occupations of the players on the Olympic team included a dentist, a plumber, an iron caster and three weavers. The Athletic News touted the game as "patricians" versus "plebeians".

After the introduction of the FA Amateur Cup in 1893, the Old Carthusians won the title twice, in 1894 and 1897, and reached the final three times in total of the first four occasions in which it was awarded. Before the first final, in which they defeated the Casuals 2-1, a dispute arose over the use of penalty shootouts. An Old Carthusian spokesman said: "Punishment is an unpleasant sign that our behavior and honesty are not all they should be". In 1894 they were invited to join the newly formed Southern League along with a number of teams, including the old boys' club, Old Westminsters. The old boys' teams refused to join the new league and tried to convince the 2nd Scots Guards to leave the league as well.

The team that won the Arthur Dunn Cup in 1903

After the amateur teams had been used as a test field for future professional players, the old boys' clubs were isolated and separated from the FA Amateur Cup in 1902-03 to create the Arthur Dunn Cup . As of 2012, the club continued to compete in the Arthur Dunn Cup and reached the final during the centenary of the 2002-03 competition when it was defeated by the Old Salopians . It was a repetition of the very first title in 1903, when the Carthusian and Salopians shared the title after a tie repetition. At the time of the 100th anniversary, the Old Carthusians were the most successful team in this competition, as they had won it in 19 out of 24 finals. Since then, they have won it five more times, winning 24 finals out of 30.

In 2008 the club took part in a tournament that also included several former FA Cup winners, including the Royal Engineers , ( 1875 winners ).

Along with Wimbledon and the Royal Engineers , the Old Carthusians are the only three teams to have won both the FA Cup and the FA Amateur Cup.

In 2011 the Old Carthusians reached the final of the AFA Seniors Cup, a historic achievement for a "closed club". But after scoring two more goals at halftime, they lost the game against the Old Salesians 2-3. The Old Carthusians won two other titles in the Arthurian League and the Arthur Dunn Cup in doubles.

Following their 1-0 win in the 2015 Arthur Dunn Cup final against old rivals Lancing Old Boys , the Old Carthusians made history in the Arthurian League by finishing first in the Premier Division for three consecutive years and at the same time Arthur Dunn Cup won. Only the Lancing Old Boys in the 1980s could do that.
