Old Fort Johnson
The Old Fort Johnson is a Grade I listed property in Montgomery County ( State of New York ). It was built by Major General of the British Forces and businessman William Johnson during the colonial days.
Geographical location
The Old Fort Johnson site is located immediately north of the Mohawk River . In an east-west direction, New York State Route 5 leads past the house; in a north direction, New York State Route 67 branches off here to Johnstown . Fort Johnson part of the municipality of Amsterdam .
History of the building
Old Fort Johnson, or Fort Johnson, is a two-story stone house built around 1749 within the former fortifications of the city of Amsterdam. The building was built by William Johnson, who used it both as a residence and as an office and trading center. In 1763 William Johnson moved to the town of Johnstown, which he founded a few kilometers north, to Johnson Hall. His son John Johnson owned the house from 1763 to 1776, when it was confiscated by the local Committee of Safety.
The house is owned by the Montgomery County Historical Society and is operated as a museum.
Monument protection
In 1972 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a monument worth preserving and protecting .
