The Old Guard Bridge is a former road bridge in the Scottish town of Guardbridge in the Council Area Fife . The building, which is now only used by pedestrians, was included in 1973 as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2016.

history

Henry Wardlaw , Bishop of St Andrews (1403-1440) and founder of the University of St Andrews , had the Guard Bridge built to enable pilgrims to St Andrews to make a practical crossing of Eden . Although a stone slab on its flanks indicates the year 1419, it is assumed that it was built around 1440. According to documents, the bridge has been redesigned several times over the centuries. Structurally, this can be seen, among other things, from the different designs of the icebreakers . It is possible that the bridge was at least partially rebuilt in 1539 under Archbishop Beaton , whose coat of arms and monogram are embedded in a pillar. Further repairs are from the years 1601, when the bridge is said to have been in a ruinous state, between 1676 and 1686, 1786 and 1802. With the completion of a directly adjacent modern bridge in 1939, the Old Guard Bridge became obsolete for vehicle traffic. Today it is still used as a pedestrian bridge.

description

The 4.2 m wide arched bridge spans the Eden with six brick-lined segmental arches that form almost full round arches . The clear widths of the four western arches are between 11.6 m and 12.8 m. The icebreakers drawn along the pillars continue along the parapets as exits for pedestrians. The 3.7 m wide carriageway is located between the parapets.
