The Old Tongland Bridge is a road bridge in the village of Tongland in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. It spans the Dee , which at this point forms the border between the Parishs Tongland and Kirkcudbright . The bridge is not to be confused with the Tongland Bridge a few hundred meters downstream .
description
The masonry viaduct is located on the southern edge of Tongland a short distance above the Tongland hydroelectric power station . It was built around 1737 and today there is a small side street across the Dee. The Old Tongland Bridge spans the Dee in two segment arcs . It is around 30 m long in total. Its masonry is made of quarry stone with lined arches. A simple quarry stone parapet with natural stone caps made of sandstone delimits the road. A narrow pedestrian path runs along the road on one side. The effectively usable width is around three meters. Ice breakers emerge triangularly from the central pillar .
