Tongland is a town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located about three kilometers northeast of Kirkcudbright on the right bank of the Dee .

history

Presumably in the 12th century a Premonstratensian monastery was established in Tongland with the Tongland Abbey . According to tradition, the last abbot threw himself before the eyes of King James IV in an attempt to fly from the battlements of Stirling Castles . After the monastery was given up, the old parish church of Tongland was built on the site in the 17th century . Today's neo-Gothic Tongland Parish Church was built in 1813.

Is the mausoleum in the cemetery James Beaumont Neilson , the inventor of the first blast stoves for blast furnaces . During the First World War , aircraft engines were manufactured for military purposes in a factory in Tongland. The automobile manufacturer Galloway Motors moved into the production halls in the 1920s . In 1936, the Tongland hydroelectric power station completed a series of hydroelectric power stations along the Dee. To generate electricity, this was dammed northeast of the village to the Tongland Loch .

traffic

With the Old Tongland Bridge , a crossing of the Dee was built around 1737 at the height of today's hydroelectric power station. The Tongland Bridge used today was completed downstream in 1808. It leads the A711 ( Ringford - Dumfries ) over the Dee. The national road runs directly through Tongland. It connects the village in the immediate vicinity to the A75 , the A755 and the A762 .
