Oldhamstocks Parish Church

The Oldhamstocks Parish Church is a church building in the Scottish hamlet of Oldhamstocks in the East Lothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

As early as 1127, a church dedicated to St. Michael was mentioned on the site. A plaque at the cemetery entrance names 1242 as the year of construction of the nucleus of today's church. This roughly harmonizes with an estimate which names the 14th century as the year of construction. The oldest fragments of the current building are believed to have come from this building. An annex was added in 1581. The current church was essentially built in 1701, although fragments of the previous structure were integrated. The bell tower was built in the late 18th century. However, the foundation may be of an older date. The associated parish covers an area of around 30 km 2 . Its borders were redrawn as part of the territorial reform of 1889. The interior was modernized around 1860, 1907 and again between 1925 and 1927.

The former entrance on the right side is now closed by masonry. The south facade is four axes wide and designed with two lancet windows on the outside flanking two pointed arch windows. On the left is a sundial with a stone gnomon . On the right is the Hepburn Aisle, added in the 16th century . Unlike the Harl- plastered church, the red sandstone masonry is exposed . Coat of arms plates with the initials "TH" and "MS" flank the pointed arched triple window on the east side. The roof of the extension is covered with stone slabs. The bell tower protrudes slightly on the west side. It is designed with a door at the foot and a slit window located higher up. There is an open bell on the tower. The gable roofs are covered with gray slate.
