The Oldman River Dam is a dam on the upper reaches of the Oldman River in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta . It is used to irrigate an agricultural area of 700 km².
history
The dam was built in 1989–1991 as an earth and stone rubble dam. The power plant was completed a year later. The construction was controversial among the local natives, the Blackfoot Indians of the Piikani First Nation . In July 2007, Brockett's Piikani Nation took the option to acquire 25% of the hydropower project.
dam
The earth and stone embankment is 1200 m long. It has a height of 76 m above the foundation level.
Reservoir
The dam dams the Oldman River over a length of 17 km. In addition, the Castle River and Crowsnest River tributaries will be dammed up to 12 km and 7.5 km, respectively.
The reservoir has a height of 1118.6 m when it is fully blocked (FSL = full supply level) . The maximum water depth with full damming is 68.6 m. From a water level of 1109.9 m , water can be discharged via the flood relief. The water reaches the power plant via two drainage tunnels in the base of the dam. There are several tent and rest areas along the lakeshore operated by the Oldman River Provincial Recreation Area .
power plant
The power plant has two turbines of 16 MW each. Energy is obtained mainly between May and September, when the runoff is greatest. The average annual energy production is 114 GWh.
