The Crowsnest River (English for "crow's nest river") is a 53 km long right tributary of the Oldman River in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta .

River course

The Crowsnest River has its origin in the Canadian Rocky Mountains . It forms the outflow of the 1357  m high mountain lake Crowsnest Lake east of the Crowsnest Pass . With the source river Crowsnest Creek , the river has a total length of 65 km. The Crowsnest River flows east from the Rocky Mountains. The Alberta Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) follows the river. The towns of Coleman, Blairmore, Frank, Bellevue, Hillcrest and Lundbreck lie along the course of the river. Since the completion of the Oldman River Dam in 1991, the Oldman River and several tributaries such as the Crowsnest River have been dammed for several kilometers. Depending on the water level, up to 7.5 km of the lower reaches of the Crowsnest River are flooded. Alberta Highway 3 crosses the river 12 km above the estuary at Lundbreck.

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Crowsnest River covers approximately 1040 km². The mean discharge at the gauge 11 km above the estuary near Lundbreck is 7.18 m³ / s. The highest mean monthly discharges occur in May and June with 19.5 and 20.7 m³ / s.
