Oleg (Moravia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oleg (Czech Olgus , Volcus or Holcus ) was a legendary prince of Moravia (around 940 – around 949). He is said to have been the progenitor of the Zierotin family.

Lore

Oleg was first mentioned by Bartholomäus Paprocki in the Zrcadlo slavného Markrabí moravského of 1593. Jan Amos Comenius reported in more detail about him in De origine baronum a Zierotin (around 1620). Also Tomáš Pešina mentioned him in Mars moravicus (1677).

He was not mentioned in old Czech and Old Russian chronicles .

The representation can be based on real events, but it can also be a free invention in order to create an important ancestor for the Zierotin family.

identity

Oleg is said to have come from Kievan Rus and was a son of Oleg , according to Paprocki.

Oleg is the old Slavic form of the Scandinavian name Helgi . It mayhave been wornby Varangians in Russia, but also in Poland. At that time, however, it was unusual in Russia and Scandinavia for sons to have the same names as their fathers, but in Bohemia and Moravia.

Only one Oleg has survived from this period, the Oleg from Kievan Rus , the legendary founder of the Kievan Rus (lived around 850–912 / 922). Possibly should be linked to it. However, there are no descendants of him.

Jan Amos Comenius portrayed Oleg as the son of Oleg (around 955–977), which is not temporally possible. Oleg's identity remains unclear.

history

Oleg is said to have become Prince of Moravia around 922 (940?). Its headquarters were in Velehrad . His territory also included the former principality of Nitra . Oleg is said to have had to fight off Hungarian attacks. Velehrad was conquered, Oleg had to go to Olomouc . He was also expelled from there around 945/949. He went to Poland to Zemumuizl or back to the Rus.
