Bartosz Paprocki (also Bartholomew Paprocky or Bartholomew Paprocki , Polish Bartłomiej Paprocki , Czech Bartoloměj Paprocký for Hlahol a Paprocké vule * 1540 / 1543 in Sierpc , † 27. December 1614 in Lvov , Poland , now Ukraine ) was a Polish and Czech writer , Historian , translator , poet , heraldist and pioneer of Polish and Czech genealogy .

Life

Paprocki was born in the Dobrin region in 1543 (or 1540) as the son of Jędrzej Paprocki and Elżbieta von Jeżew ( Elżbieta Jeżewska ). The Paprockis belonged as a family to the Polish aristocracy , who had worn the coat of arms of the Jastrzębiec community . He studied at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, wrote poetry at an early age and devoted himself to historiography and heraldry. In 1577 he took part in the battle and siege of Danzig and was cupbearer ( Podczaszy in Polish ) of Dobrzyń . In 1584, Boleslaw I. Chrobry von Paprocki was named for the first time in a book .

Paprocki married a rich, elderly woman named Jadwiga Kossobudzka , the daughter of a castellan from Sierpc, who died around 1572. The marriage reportedly did not go well and remained childless. Paprocki was bullied by his wife and he remained a misogynist all his life after her death .

In the seventies and eighties of the 16th century he took the side of the Catholic Party and supported the candidacy of Maximilian II for the Polish throne. After Maximilian was unable to prevail against Stephan Báthory in the battle for the Polish crown after the double election in 1574/75 , Paprocký had to flee from Poland to Moravia in 1588 .

Paprocki stayed in Moravia and Bohemia for over 22 years . He learned the Czech language and wrote new poems about the history and coats of arms of Bohemia and Moravia. He also translated texts by Jan Kochanowski . In 1610 he went back to Poland and from then on lived in Wąchock . After his death in 1614, he was buried in the Franciscan Church in Lviv and is considered the father of Polish and Czech genealogy .
