Oleg Nikolajewitsch Ostapenko ( Russian Олег Николаевич Остапенко ; born May 3, 1957 in Pokoschitschi near Chernihiv , Ukrainian SSR ) was the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos from October 10, 2013 to January 21, 2015 . Ostapenko is a former colonel general in the Russian Armed Forces .

Life

In 1979 Ostapenko graduated from the "Felix Dzerzhinsky" military academy of the missile forces, one of the military academies of the Soviet Union . For ten years he held various positions in the Strategic Missile Forces. In 1992 he took another exam at a military academy. From 1992 he held management positions at the missile control center for a further ten years, most recently in Plesetsk . Between 2002 and 2008 he was promoted several times in the same field of activity. From 2008 to 2011 was Ostapenko commander of the Russian Space Forces , in November 2011, he was commander of the newly formed Russian space defense forces.

In November 2012 Ostapenko became Russian Deputy Defense Minister and in October 2013 he was appointed head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. On January 21, 2015, Ostapenko was replaced by Igor Komarov due to a restructuring of Roskosmos .
