Olibrus bicolor is a beetle fromthe smooth beetle family (Phalacridae).
features
The beetles are 2.3 to 3.2 millimeters long. They have an oval, glossy black-brown body. Near the rear end of the wing covers there is a reddish-brown spot, the shape and size of which is variable and which can be partially absent. In contrast to similar species, the spot, if present, has a distinct delimitation. Like all members of the genus Olibrus , Olibrus bicolor has two furrows along the suture of the wing cover . The antennae and legs of the beetles are yellow-brown.
distribution
Olibrus bicolor is a Holarctic species. It is widespread in Europe. They occur in the north as far as England and Scandinavia, in the south across the Mediterranean to North Africa, in the east to Central Asia. In the Nearctic (North America) it occurs in the eastern United States. There the occurrence of the species extends in the south to Florida.
Way of life
The larvae of Olibrus bicolor develop in the flower heads of various composites . The host plants include the common dandelion , the coltsfoot ( Tussilago farfara ) and the tansy ( Tanagetum vulgare ). Typical habitats for the beetles are steppe heather and sunny slopes. The adult beetles are usually seen from late March to August.
