Oliver Penrose (born June 6, 1929 in London ) is a British mathematician and physicist .

He is the son of the scientist Lionel Penrose and brother of the mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose and the chess master Jonathan Penrose . He is a mathematical physicist and specializes in statistical mechanics , thermodynamics and physical chemistry. He was at University College London and King's College, Cambridge University and received his PhD with Harold Neville Vazeille Temperley . Then he was a post-doctoral student with Lars Onsager .

Oliver Penrose was Professor of Mathematics initially at the Open University in Milton Keynes, then from 1986 until his retirement in 1994 at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh . His main field of work is the mathematical treatment of models of statistical mechanics and the theory of phase transitions, including the kinetics of phase transitions in metals and the physical chemistry of surfactants. The concept of the off diagonal long range order , which is important in superconductivity and superfluids, comes from him . He also dealt with the interpretation of quantum mechanics and the physics of the arrow of time.

His hobbies include music (piano and cello) and chess.
