Oliver Thomas (born November 2, 1971 in Merzig ) is a German university professor for business informatics . Since 2009 he has held the chair for information management and business informatics at the University of Osnabrück .

Life

After studying business administration , Oliver Thomas worked from 1999 to 2002 as a research assistant at the Institute for Information Systems (IWi) at Saarland University under August-Wilhelm Scheer . The institute was integrated as a department in the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH) in 2002 . In this research department, he was Senior Researcher and Deputy Research Area Manager from 2003 to 2009 as well as head of the Business Process Management research group .

Thomas did his doctorate in 2006 under August-Wilhelm Scheer with the dissertation management of reference models - design and implementation of an information system for the development and application of reference models . The work was awarded the 1st prize of the sponsors of the Institute for Empirical Economic Research at Saarland University. He completed his habilitation with a thesis on fuzzy process engineering - integration of uncertainty in the model-based design of process-oriented information systems . In November 2008 he was awarded the Venia legendi for business administration by the Faculty of Law and Economics at Saarland University .

From 2004 to 2009 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo , where he was in charge of the Business Process Management department in the Master of Business Administration .

Thomas has held the Chair of Information Management and Business Informatics (IMWI) at the University of Osnabrück since September 2009 . Since 2016 he has also been managing director of the Institute for Information Management and Management (IMU) at the University of Osnabrück with a total of around 60 employees.

His research focuses on business process management & analysis , product service systems engineering ( hybrid value creation ), IT governance, risk & compliance management, and mobile and wearable information systems .

Thomas is the spokesman for the business informatics department in the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) and a member of the advisory board of the Industry 4.0 Lower Saxony network set up by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics . He was the organizer and conference chair of the 12th International Conference on Information Systems, which took place from March 4th to 6th, 2015 at the University of Osnabrück. Oliver Thomas is also Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of LMIS AG, an IT service company from Osnabrück.
