Life

Vornberger studied computer science from 1972 to 1976 at the University of Dortmund. In 1980 he received his doctorate on a topic from complexity theory at the University of Paderborn. He then went to the Computer Science Department of the University of California at Berkeley, USA as a postdoc for a year . Back in Germany, he increasingly turned to practical computer science and completed his habilitation in 1986 with a thesis on the programming of multiprocessor systems. In 1988 he was appointed to a C3 professorship for practical computer science at the University of Osnabrück. In 1992 he was able to move up to a C4 position through remaining negotiations based on calls to Siegen, Trier and Bern (Switzerland) .

At the end of the 1990s, his interest shifted to computer graphics, web publishing and e-learning. Together with four other colleagues, he founded “virtUOS” in 2002, the center for supporting virtual teaching at the University of Osnabrück, which has since acquired numerous third-party funding. As part of the Lower Saxony joint project ELAN (E-Learning Academic Network), Vornberger and virtUOS employees developed the authoring system “media2mult” and the lecture recording system “virtPresenter”, both of which are now also in use outside of Osnabrück.

In addition to his activities in research and teaching, Vornberger is also involved in self-administration: As managing director of the Institute for Computer Science, he is a member of the faculty council, student advisor, chairman of the board of virtUOS and spokesman for the Senate of Osnabrück University.
