The one-armed weightlifting at the Olympic Games 1896 in Athens took place on 7 April at the Panathinaiko Stadium instead.
There was no weight limit in this competition. Each athlete had three attempts, after everyone had completed these, the three athletes with the best results received three more attempts.
Only one hand could be used to lift the weights, the competition is comparable to today's snatch .
The Dane Viggo Jensen , who was injured shortly before his Olympic victory in the two-armed competition , was able to take second place with a weight of 57.0 kg. The Greek Alexandros Nikolopoulos also managed to lift 57.0 kg, but he lifted only 40.0 kg with his other arm, so that he took third place. The Briton Launceston Elliot won with a weight of 71.0 kg.
