Launceston Elliot
Launceston Elliot (born June 9, 1874 in Bombay , † August 8, 1930 in Melbourne , Australia ) was a Scottish athlete.
Life
Elliot came from a family of officials who held many high positions in the British Empire. His great-grandfather was governor of Madras and his grandfather Charles Elliot was governor of Saint Helena . He himself was born in India , where his father Gilbert Wray Elliot was a judge.
Career
Elliot won the one-armed weightlifting competition at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 . He was the first Scottish Olympic champion . In two-armed weightlifting , he finished second behind the Dane Viggo Jensen . He also took part in wrestling (4th place), shackling (5th place) and athletics . He also went to the games in Paris four years later, but could only achieve eleventh place in the discus throw.
