Ronald C. Roberts Jr. (born August 5, 1991 in Bayonne , New Jersey ) is a Dominican - American basketball player .

Career

High school and college

Robert's parents met in Portugal, where they both played basketball professionally. After their playing careers ended, they moved to Bayonne , New Jersey , where Roberts was born. At the age of three months he moved to live with his grandparents in the Dominican Republic , where he lived until he was five. He then moved back to Bayonne, where he attended the same elementary school as Shaquille O'Neal . He then went to high school in his hometown for two years before attending St. Peter's Preparatory School for the remainder of his high school years. There he was elected to the First Team All-County in his first year and helped his team to win the County Championship. In his senior year he managed to do both again, and was also elected to the Third Team All-State .

Although he originally wanted to spend his college days at St. John's University , he decided to go to Saint Joseph's University after a coaching change . There, too, he managed to win several awards. In his freshman , sophomore and junior seasons, he was named the team's Most Improved Player . In addition, he was named the team's Most Valuable Player in his junior and senior years . As a junior he was also elected to the All- Atlantic 10 Third Team and the All-Big 5 First Team . In his senior year, his team managed to win the championship in the Atlantic 10 Conference, after which he was elected to the 2014 Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team .

NBA Development League

In the 2014 NBA draft Roberts was disregarded. He first played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat in the Summer League and was also signed by Philadelphia, but released shortly afterwards. He then played for the Delaware 87ers , the Philadelphia farm team , in the NBA Development League . After two months he was transferred to the Santa Cruz Warriors . After only two games for the Golden State Warriors team , he moved to the Philippines and played four games for the San Miguel Beermen .

In July 2015, he signed a short-term contract with the Toronto Raptors after appearing for the team in the Summer League. He then played for the Raptors 905 farm team and was called up for the All-Star Game in 2016 . After a long break from injury, he was finally released by the Raptors.

Europe

After Roberts initially appeared for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Summer League, he moved to the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi to Tofaş Spor Kulübü . After only ten games, he injured himself again and left the team. After a brief engagement with the Adelaide 36ers in the Australian National Basketball League , which was resolved before the start of the season, Roberts signed with Hapoel Jerusalem . In his first season without major injury problems for a long time, he helped the team to reach the final four tournament of the Ligat ha'Al , where they were eliminated by Hapoel Holon .

Roberts did not receive a follow-up contract. In January 2019, he signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club Science City Jena , who was in a relegation battle at the time, until the end of the season. After the club's relegation, for which he got an average of 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds, he moved to the French first division club Élan Sportif Chalonnais .

National team

Roberts played for the Dominican Republic during the centrobasket in 2014 . He was used in six games, the team finished third at the end of the tournament. After five years with no playing time in the national team, he was appointed to two qualifying games for the 2019 World Basketball Championship in 2019 . Following qualification, he was first in the extended and then in the final squad for the World Cup.
