The 100 meter freestyle swimming competition for sailors at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was held on April 11th. The competition took place in the Bay of Zea . Only sailors of the Greek Navy of the warships lying in the port of Piraeus were eligible to participate in this competition . Of eleven registered "athletes" only three competed. Olympic champion was the Greek Ioannis Malokinis ahead of his compatriot Spyridon Chazapis .
The swimmers were brought out to sea with a ship, where the start was between two buoys. The athletes swam to the bank, where the finish line was marked with a red flag.
