The men's 100 meter freestyle swimming competition at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was the first of four swimming competitions to be held on April 11th. The competition took place in the Bay of Zea . The Olympic champion was the Hungarian Alfréd Hajós , who crossed the finish line half a meter ahead of the Austrian Otto Herschmann . The order of places 3 to 10 is not known. Four Greek athletes are also unknown.
The swimmers were brought out to sea with a ship, where the start was between two buoys. The athletes swam to the bank, where the finish line was marked with a red flag.
