The men's 100 meter freestyle swimming competition at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles was held on July 31. Although put Mark Stockwell protest against the validity of the A-finals one because it a false start by the American Rowdy Gaines suspected. However, the FINA rejected this protest and declared Gaines the Olympic champion and Stockwell the silver medalist. The Swede Per Johansson won bronze .
