The swimming competition over 100 meters freestyle men at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was held from 17 to 18 August. The reigning Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband from the Netherlands was able to defend his title. The South African Roland Schoeman took silver and Ian Thorpe from Australia won bronze.
