The men's 100-meter freestyle swimming competition at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta was held on July 28th. The Russian Alexander Popov , who had already been Olympic champion in this discipline four years earlier, was able to defend his title. Silver went to Gary Hall Junior from the United States. The Brazilian Gustavo Borges , who won silver in Barcelona in 1992, swam to bronze.
