Indrek Sei (born July 26, 1972 in Tallinn , then Estonian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Estonian swimmer . His main courses were the short butterfly and freestyle courses as well as the swimming pool . By winning the bronze medal at the European Sprint Swimming Championships in Gelsenkirchen in 1991 , he became the first Estonian medalist at the European short course championships.

Career

Indrek Sei started swimming at the age of seven. The two-time junior world champion from 1989 in the 100 meter freestyle and 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay made his first international appearance among the seniors at the age of 19 at the European Sprint Swimming Championships in Gelsenkirchen in 1991 , where he surprisingly won the bronze medal in the 100 meter medley. He was able to repeat this result a year later at the European Sprint Swimming Championships in Espoo in 1992 . At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he went 50 meters and 100 meters freestyle to the start and finished 31st and 32nd. He swam these two distances at the 1993 European Swimming Championships in Sheffield , where he finished twelfth and eleven. At the European Sprint Swimming Championships in Gateshead in 1993 , Sei secured a medal in the 100 meter individual medal and was only beaten this time by the Dutchman Ron Dekker . At the short course world championship in 1993 in Palma he reached the finals over 50 meters freestyle and finished in seventh place. In the following years he was unable to improve his performance and was usually eliminated from World Championships in advance. Nevertheless, he was nominated for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . he took 26th place over 50 meters freestyle and 32nd place over 100 meters freestyle. At the World Short Course Championships in Gothenburg in 1997 , he reached the semi-finals over 50 and 100 meters freestyle. In the end he finished eleventh and 14th. He also competed over 100 meters butterfly, but retired despite his best performance in the prelim. In 1998 he just missed qualifying for the final run at the European Short Course Championships in Sheffield as tenth and ninth over 50 meters and 100 meters freestyle . In 2000 he was nominated again for the Olympic Games . In Sydney he reached places 29 and 43 on the short freestyle courses. Seven years after winning the silver medal at the European Sprint Swimming Championships , he was able to repeat this success and only had to admit defeat to the Slovenian Peter Mankoč at the 2000 European short course in Valencia over 100 meters . His last international championship was the 2002 European Short Course in Moscow , where he reached the final over 50 meters butterfly and ended his international career with an Estonian record and seventh place.

During his career, Sei won 38 Estonian championship titles on the 50-meter track and 66 titles on the 25-meter track. He broke Estonian records 14 times. Because of his good performance in 1993, he was named Estonia's Sportsman of the Year .
