The men's 100 meter freestyle swimming competition at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was held from September 19-20. Olympic champion was Pieter van den Hoogenband from the Netherlands. The Russian Alexander Popov , who had already won the Olympic gold medal four years earlier, took silver and Atlanta silver medalist Gary Hall junior from the United States won bronze this time.

In the first run, Éric Moussambani from Equatorial Guinea, who had only learned to swim a few months before the games, became famous. With a time of 1: 52.72 min, he went down in Olympic history with the nickname Eric the Eel as the slowest swimmer of all time.
