On August 6th at 8 o'clock the athletes from the German Reich, the United States and Czechoslovakia as well as Argentina, Chile, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Romania and Hungary started the competition. The following day, the remaining athletes intervened in the competition at the same time.

On the first day it was cloudy and dry with wind, which influenced the event somewhat. Erich Krempel set a new Olympic record with 544 points. On the second day it was sunny in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. However, the wind did not affect the competition. The Swede Torsten Ullman was not only able to beat Krempels record from the previous day with 559 points, but also set a new world record. With this achievement he won the gold medal.
