At the Olympic Games in 1956 in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne , the boxing - bantamweight tournament for men was held from November 23 to December 1 .
According to the competition regulations of the Association Internationale de Boxe Amateure (AIBA), the body weight of every bantamweight boxer must be greater than 51 kg and a maximum of 54 kg.
18 athletes from 18 nations determined the Olympic champion in Melbourne's West Melbourne Stadium : The German Wolfgang Behrendt won ahead of the South Korean Song Sun-Cheon as well as the Irish Freddie Gilroy and the Chilean Claudio Barrientos .
