Éder Jofre (born March 26, 1936 in São Paulo , Brazil ) is a former Brazilian boxer . He was a normal boom, a counter-boxer with a hard hitting hand.
Life
There are few records of his fights as many reels of film from the period were reused for other purposes. He didn't speak English and rarely boxed in the US or Europe.
He began his professional bantamweight career in 1957 . In 1959 he was able to beat ex-World Cup challenger Leo Espinoza. On January 18, 1962, he won the world bantamweight title against the undefeated Johnny Caldwell by technical knockout in the tenth round. After the associations were divided into WBC and WBA , he held both titles. In 1965 he got more and more problems with adhering to the bantamweight limit and so he lost the title to Fighting Harada in a controversial decision in Japan . The rematch a year later he also lost to a point defeat. Harada remained the only one who could beat Jofre in his professional career. At Ring Magazine he is considered the second best bantamweight of all time after Carlos Zárate .
After the defeats and the loss of the title, he resigned for the time being, but made a comeback in the featherweight division after three years in 1969 . In 1973, at the age of 37, he won the WBC world featherweight title by winning points over Cuban exile José Legrá and defended him by knockout against the powerful Mexican southpaw Vicente Saldivar in his last fight. Saldivar was a former world champion, but was inactive for two years before this fight. In June 1974 Jofre was finally stripped of the world title because he did not meet his obligation to defend his title. He never lost featherweight and resigned for good in 1976.
In 1982 he became a city councilor in São Paulo and joined the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) as a member from 1989 . In 1992 Jofre was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
