In the 1956 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Melbourne on November 26, in the Royal Exhibition Building , the weight lifting in the light heavyweight division held for men.
It was won by the American Thomas Kono ahead of the Soviet Russian Vasily Stepanow and the American James George .
The athletes competed against each other in the so-called three-way battle. In addition to the usual disciplines of tearing and pushing, this also included pushing.
According to the competition regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the body weight of every light heavyweight boxer had to be over 75.0 kg and no more than 82.5 kg.
