Omedu (German Omedo ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Kasepää ( Kasepää vald ) in the Estonian district of Jõgeva .

Description and history

Omedu has 119 inhabitants (as of 2000). It is located at the mouth of the river of the same name ( Omedu jõgi ) in the Peipussee ( Peipsi järv ). In 1957 the first bridge was built over the river; previously, a ferry was used to transport people, animals and loads.

The place was first mentioned in 1590 under the name Willa Omieden . In the six kilometer long street village mainly fishermen lived until the 20th century. There was a school since 1810, which was closed in 1962. Today the village association has its headquarters in the historic schoolhouse from 1898.

In the years 1981 to 1988 a model collective farm for fishing with numerous work and residential buildings was built in Omedu .
