Omid Popalzay (born January 25, 1996 in Kabul ) is a Dutch - Afghan football player . He is currently under contract with the Belgian third division club KVC Sint-Eloois-Winkel Sport and is the current Afghan national team player .

Career

Popalzay was born to ethnic Pashtuns in the Afghan capital Kabul on January 25, 1996 and moved to the Netherlands as a child . He started his career at the provincial club SV Estria before joining the youth team at NEC Nijmegen . Here he went through the youth teams up to the A-youth. Popalzay made his debut in the second team of Nijmegen as B-Junior when he was used on April 8, 2013 (17th matchday) in the 1-0 win against RKC Waalwijk II in the Beloften Eredivisie . In total, he made eleven appearances with the NEC amateurs by 2015 and scored one goal. For the 2015/16 season, the attacking midfielder moved to Achilles '29 in the Eerste Divisie . Initially intended for the second team that played in the Beloften Eredivisie, it was also used in the first team from September 2015, for the first time on September 11, 2015 (6th matchday) in the 3-0 defeat against Sparta Rotterdam . He also played in both teams in the 2016/17 season. After relegation to the Tweede Divisie , Popalzay initially stayed with the club, but after the club was also in acute danger of relegation in the third division, he moved to FC Lienden during the 2017/18 winter break . After being without a club for half a year, Popalza joined the Adelaide Comets in Australia in January 2019 . For the 2019/20 season he moved to Belgium to the third division club KVC Sint-Eloois-Winkel Sport .

National team

Popalzay was nominated for the first time for the senior national team of Afghanistan in October 2015 for the World Cup qualifiers against Singapore and Syria . He made his debut in the 1-0 loss to Singapore on October 8, 2015. Popalzay was nominated for the 2015 South Asian Cup by national coach Petar Šegrt . During the tournament, he made four appearances and scored two goals in the 4-1 win over the Maldives , including a free-kick goal for a 2-1 lead. In the end, they finished second after losing 2-1 in the final against India .
