Omori ryu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ōmori-Ryū (大 森 流: お お も り り ゅ う) (= the school after Master Ōmori) is a relatively new Iaidō style among the old schools ( koryū ) of Japanese martial arts . This style was developed by Ōmori Masamitsu Rokurozaemon in the early 18th century . What is special about this school is that the sword forms (kata) are no longer practiced from the traditional Iai-hiza of the samurai, but for the first time from the seiza (kneeling position), as it is also known in Zen .

The forms (kata) of Ōmori-ryū

Today Ōmori-ryū is mostly taught as part of the schools Musō Jikiden Eishin ryū and Musō Shinden-ryū . Both schools have integrated the forms (= kata) as shoden (= beginning level) into their teaching system.

Musō Jikiden Eishin-Ryū:

  1. Mae (forward)
  2. Migi (from right)
  3. Hidari (from left)
  4. Ushiro (backwards)
  5. Yaegaki (eight-fold fence)
  6. Ukenagashi (receiving and defending fluently)
  7. Kaishaku (Second at Seppuku)
  8. Tsukekomi (persecution)
  9. Tsukikage (moonlight)
  10. Oikaze (tail wind)
  11. Nukiuchi (pull and hit)

Musō Shinden-ryū

  1. Shohatto
  2. Satō (left sword)
  3. Utō (right sword)
  4. Ataritō (hit sword)
  5. Inyō (= ying-yang) -shintai
  6. Ryūtō (dragon sword / flowing sword)
  7. Juntō
  8. Gyakutō (opposite sword)
  9. Seichūtō
  10. Korantō
  11. Nukiuchi (pull and hit)
  12. Inyō (= ying-yang) -shintai kaewaza

Despite different names, both lists are basically the same forms, even if they are stylistically executed differently in the two schools. Nakayama Hakudō , who rearranged the tradition of Musō Shinden-Ryū, added Inyō-shintai kaewaza as the 12th form . The shape can also be viewed as a variant of Yaegaki / Inyōshintai .

Ōmori-ryū as a single school

Today Ōmori-ryū is taught sporadically. Nobuyuki Watanabe teaches a certain form of Ōmori-ryū, with which he explains the basics of Aikidō .
