history

The company was founded in 1884 by Gottfried Plüss as a cement factory in Oftringen. His goal was to produce the best quality glass putty and to interest glass and paint dealers in it. As a result, Plüss-Staufer expanded its glass putty business to include the chalk trade and later to the production of linseed oil . For this purpose, Plüss-Staufer opened a quarry in Châlons-sur-Marne ( France ) in 1891 and another in Omey four years later.

In 1894 the company opened its plant in Oftringen, which was followed by one in Omey in 1900. Opened in 1912 Pluss-Staufer his work in time to Germany belonging Strasbourg . The plants in France and Germany were followed by the establishment of subsidiaries in Paris and Cologne in 1925 and 1932, respectively.

In 1946 the company expanded to the United States and founded the Pluess-Staufer Co. There, in 1976, it opened a quarry and an associated factory. In 1981 operations began in Australia.

In Austria, Plüss-Staufer took over the majority of Gersheim's limestone and marble works in Gummern in 1975 and in 1992 Omya acquired Albogel GmbH, manufacturer of marble aggregates in Neu-Pirka (Styria). The subsidiary Unikristall precipitates calcium carbonate (PCC, slurry) in plants in Golling (Salzburg) and Hausmening (Lower Austria). Omya is involved in the chalk mining in Müllendorf .

International expansion accelerated from the 1990s onwards with the opening of further quarries and factories in Asia and Latin America, which were followed in 2004 by further ones in China, Russia, the Near and Middle East, Brazil, India, Vietnam and Romania.
