The One Seneca Tower is a skyscraper in downtown Buffalo , New York . The name of the building was Marine Midland Center from 1972 to 1999 , when Marine Midland Bank was renamed HSBC Bank USA by parent company HSBC . It kept the name One HSBC Center until 2013. The building cost about $ 50 million at the time of construction, which is equivalent to about $ 322 million today. It is 161 meters (529 ft ) high and has 40 floors for a total of 111,400 m². It was designed by the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill architectural firm and is an example of modern architecture .
The One Seneca Tower is the tallest privately owned office building outside of New York City . Only the Erastus Corning Tower in Albany is higher . In the square in front of the building is the monument "Vroom, Shhh" by the sculptor Ronald Bladen . When the view is clear, the tower can be seen from 32 kilometers. In addition to HSBC Bank USA, the best-known tenants include companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and UBS .

On December 5, 2012, HSBC Bank USA announced that it would leave the building by October 2013 as it would not extend the lease any further. After the law firm Phillips Lytle LLP also left the building and in the course of the closure of the Canadian Consulate Buffalo, the building has been 90 percent empty since 2014.
