Ongata Rongai , also known as Diaspora , is a city in Kajiado County , Kenya . The city is 17 km south of downtown Nairobi and west of the Ngong Mountains and is 1,731 meters above sea level. The population was 172,569 at the 2019 census.

history

Today's Ongata Rongai, which was historically settled by Maasai , arose from the meeting of a cattle market in the northernmost tip of Kajiado County and a settlement around a quarry. The cattle market and quarry expanded quickly and grew together in the late 1950s.

Due to the rapid development of the real estate market from the 1990s onwards, Ongata Rongai has developed into a populous suburb of Nairobi with an area of ​​around 16 square kilometers. The population is ethnically diverse and has immigrated from all parts of the country.

Different strata of the population live in Ongata Rongai, but the middle class dominates. Although largely within the metropolitan area of ​​Nairobi, it does not fall within the city's administrative boundaries and is separated from Nairobi by the Mbagathi River. Several banks have branches or their headquarters in the city. Education and healthcare also play an important role. There is a market area and modern shopping centers.

Ongata Rongai has a station on the Nairobi-Malaba standard-gauge railway, which was inaugurated in October 2019.

education

The first school, Ongata Rongai Primary School, opened in 1949. The Africa Nazarene University and the Adventist University of Africa are in the city.
