Only Forever is a song by James V. Monaco (music) and Johnny Burke (lyrics) released in 1940.

Monaco and Burke wrote “Only Forever” for the film Rhythm on the River (1940, directed by Victor Schertzinger ). Mary Martin and Bing Crosby , who introduces the song, play the leading roles . Monaco and Burke received an Oscar nomination for “Only Forever” in 1941 in the Best Song category .

Bing Crosby (1942)

Bing Crosby's recording of the song, accompanied by John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra, was released on Decca 3300, coupled with When the Moon Comes Over Madison Square, and gave it a number one hit in the United States. Also Eddy Duchin came with the song into the Top 20th

Several cover versions of the film song were made as early as 1940/41 . a. by Gene Krupa and His Orchestra (vocals: Howard Dulaney; Okeh 5686) and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (vocals: Allan Storr, Victor 26666), which reached # 7 on the charts with Only Forever in the United States in September 1940, where he stayed nine weeks.

In Belgium he was covered by the swing orchestras of Jean Omer , Jeff De Boeck , René Gil and John Ouwerx . In the 1950s and 60s, the Count Basie Orchestra also interpreted the film song with Joe Williams , The Hi-Lo’s , Tiny Bradshaw , Nat King Cole , Al Bowlly , Kay Starr and Dean Martin . Ted Curson recorded an instrumental version on his prestige album Fire Down Below in 1962.
