Onosato Toshinobu ( Japanese オ ノ サ ト ・ ト シ ノ ブ , actually 小野 里 利 信; born June 8, 1912 in Iida ( Nagano Prefecture ); died November 30, 1986 ) was a Japanese artist during the Shōwa period .

life and work

Onosato Toshinobu was born in Iida but then moved to Kiryū in Gunma Prefecture . He began studying engineering in 1931, which he gave up in the same year to become a painter. This was followed by a study of painting in the Western style with Tsuda Seifū . In 1935 he participated with other students of Ishida in the establishment of the "Black West Painting Group" (黒 色 洋 画 協会, Kokushoku yōga kyōkai). 1937 followed a participation in the "Association of Free Artists" (自由 美術 家 協会; Jiyū bijutsuka kyōkai). After the outbreak of the Pacific War , Onosato was drafted in 1942. He experienced the end of the war in Manchuria, followed by three years of imprisonment.

After his return in 1948 Onosato settled in Kiryū again. In 1949 he became a member of the Association of Free Artists and in 1955 a member of the "Art Club". In 1963 he won a prize at the 7th Japan International Art Exhibition at the Tokyo Municipal Art Museum. In 1964 and 1966 he was a representative of Japan at the Biennale di Venezia . From the 1970s onwards, he hardly left his studio and painted without any ties to an artists' association. In 1978 he published "Flight to the Real - Anthology by Onosato Toshinobu". In 1988, two years after his death, “Paths to Abstraction - Pictorial Anthology by Onosato Toshinobu” was published.

Onosato's work is ornamental-abstract, with geometrically structured color patterns in warm colors taking center stage.
