from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Onsen ( Japanese 温泉 郡 , Onsen-gun , German: "District of the hot spring") is a former district (Gun) in Ehime Prefecture in Japan .

On January 1, 2005, the district was dissolved as part of a municipal consolidation. The population in 2003 in the cities of Shigenobu , Kawauchi and Nakajima together was 40,690, the area 248.73 km².

The district of Onsen was centrally located in what is now the urban area of Matsuyama and was known in ancient Japan, until the end of the Heian period , under the name Yu no kōri ( 湯 郡 , dt. "District of hot water"). In fact, the county owes its name to a famous hot spring called Dōgo Onsen . This is also the oldest thermal bath in Japan (see also: Matsuyama ).
