Ontholestes haroldi is a species of beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).

features

The genus Ontholestes is represented in Central Europe with 3 species. In addition to Ontholestes haroldi , Ontholestes murinus and the cubed predator beetle ( Ontholestes tessellatus ) occur in Central Europe , but they differ in particular in body size, leg and antennae color.

Ontholestes haroldi reaches a body length of 10 to 15 millimeters. The pronotum of the beetle has acute angles pointing forward. The head, pronotum and fore wing covers have black and golden yellow hairs. The black legs ( femora ) have a yellow apical end. The rails ( tibia ) and tarsi are yellow. The antennae are colored yellow.

distribution

The species is widespread but rare in southern Europe (Italy), southern and southeastern Central Europe, the Balkans (former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria) and Eastern Europe (Hungary, Ukraine). In Germany their occurrence is limited to the south.

Way of life

A typical habitat for the beetle is the litter layer of warm, dry and light forests and bushes. They are found on plant and animal remains and cadavers from spring to autumn.
