Oommen Chandy ( Malayalam : ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി [ ˈumːən ˈtʃɑːɳɖi ]; born October 31, 1943 in Kumarakom ) is an Indian politician ( Indian National Congress ) and was Chief Minister (head of government) of the state of Kerala from 2011 to 2016 . He previously held the post from 2004 to 2006.

Oommen Chandy was born on October 31, 1943 in Kumarakom in the Kottayam district of today's Kerala state into a family of Thomas Christians. He has a bachelor's degree in law . He began his political career through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the higher education organization of the Congress Party in Kerala. In 1970 he first successfully competed in the general election in Kerala as a candidate in the Puthuppally constituency in the Kottayam district. Since then, he has been able to defend his constituency in every election (a total of ten times). In the Congress-led governments of Kerala, Oommen Chandy held various brief ministerial offices under Chief Ministers K. Karunakaran and AK Antony : From 1977 to 1978 he was Minister of Labor, Minister of the Interior from 1981 to 1982 and Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1994. After the resignation of the incumbent Chief Minister AK Antony, Oommen Chandy took over his office in 2004. After the 2006 parliamentary election was lost to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) , Chandy lost the office again and became the opposition leader. The 2011 election again won the Congress party, so Chandy returned to the office of Chief Minister in 2011. In the 2016 general election in Kerala, the CPI (M) won again and Chandy resigned as Chief Minister.
