The Oopeltidae are a species-poor family of nudibranchs from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The twelve or so species of the family are geographically restricted to South Africa.
features
The representatives of the family Oopeltidae are nudibranchs with a worm-shaped body. The housing is reduced to a more or less thick shell plate and completely covered by the jacket. The coat takes up about half of the total body length. The breathing opening ( pneumostome ) is roughly in the middle of the length of the jacket. A weak keel can be formed. The sole is not divided into three parts, sometimes a central longitudinal pit may be present. The jaw is ribbed ( odontognath ). The penis consists of four sections, one epiphallus is missing. The vagina is simple, the atrium not swollen.
Geographical distribution
The few types of the family are found exclusively in South Africa.
Systematics
The family Oopeltidae is divided into two subfamilies by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005). Schileyko (2007) follows this subdivision.
- Family Oopeltidae Cockerell, 1891
- Subfamily Oopeltinae Cockerell, 1891
- Subfamily Ariopeltinae Sirgel, 1985
- Genus Ariopelta Sirgel, 1985
