Operation Licorne

The Opération Licorne (German: Operation Einhorn ) is a French military support mission in the Ivory Coast . It was launched shortly after the 2002-2007 civil war . The main objectives of the mission are to provide support for the United Nations Mission, Opération des Nations Unies en Côte d'Ivoire (ONUCI), and to ensure the safety of French citizens residing in Ivory Coast. On April 1, 2011, it consisted of around 600 French elite soldiers. According to other reports, 300 soldiers were dispatched on April 3, 2011, bringing the unit to 1,400 soldiers.

The base of Opération Licorne is located in Port-Bouët , a district of Abidjan , in the immediate vicinity of Abidjan Airport .

The coordination with the UN mission ONUCI is regulated in the UN Security Council resolution 1609 .

On March 8, 2011 , in the wake of the government crisis , Laurent Gbagbo imposed a flight ban on aircraft operated by the Licorne Opera and ONUCI over Ivorian territory. On March 31, 2011, according to a correspondent for the TV broadcaster BFM TV , French soldiers, presumably from the Licorne Opération, were patrolling Abidjan and stationed at strategic points. On April 3, soldiers from Opération Licorne took control of Abidjan Airport . At the time, 1700 foreigners, including 800 French, were at the base of the Licorne Opération.
